The Oaks lawn now hosts the first ceremonial sweat lodge on campus. The idea stemmed from students taking the Indigenous Peoples of Canada course taught by Professors Trudy Sable and Roger Lewis. With help from Indigenous Student Advisor Raymond Sewell MA’14, his father, and NSCC’s Indigenous Student Advisor Gary Joseph, the group constructed a lodge using wood and rocks gathered in the area and then participated in a ceremony. It will remain on campus for a year and be used for additional events.
