Saint Lucia national Christopher Fevrier vowed that when he made it, he would give back to the community. “I promised myself that I would set up an award,” he explains. “It’s an amazing feeling knowing you can help someone and have a positive impact.”
In 2019, Fevrier followed through on his commitment and established the Caribbean Students Success Fund at Saint Mary’s. The bursary provides opportunities for Caribbean students to complete their undergraduate degrees by alleviating financial stress. “I depended on financial support while studying,” he says. “That motivated me to pay forward the opportunities that I was fortunate enough to receive. As the program grows, I hope it encourages others to give.”
After starting his education at Midwestern State University in Texas, Fevrier chose to complete his degree at Saint Mary’s. “I took a year off and worked. Then an opportunity came my way to continue my studies,” he explains. “But I was only able to capitalize on it if I attended a different university. That’s when Saint Mary’s University came onto my radar.”
While attending Saint Mary’s, Fevrier was very motivated to achieve his goals. “It was my chance to finish my undergraduate degree, so I was more focused and determined to walk across that stage,” he adds. However, that didn’t stop him from becoming involved in the community. One of the first things Fevrier noticed about Saint Mary’s was its large international student population, which led him to join Students Acting for Global Awareness (SAGA).
“I love the fact that Saint Mary’s has a lot of international students. I enjoyed learning about others’ experiences growing up in different parts of the world,” he says. “Volunteering with SAGA, I was able to meet amazing people from different walks of life and plan events that created a better sense of understanding and community.”
Now an Insurance Advisor with TD Bank in Halifax, Fevrier continues to be involved with Saint Mary’s. “The university is my alma mater and it will forever be a concern of mine. As the international student population grows, there will always be someone who needs support and I will continue to give as long as I can.”
