First virtual graduation celebration recognizes the class of 2020

By Maroon & White | spring 2020

The class of 2020 has faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 crisis, but they have worked hard and persevered. To recognize our graduates’ accomplishments, Saint Mary’s hosted its first virtual graduation celebration on May 22. The special event included video messages from President Summerby-Murray, Chancellor Michael Durland BComm’87 DComm’10, Indigenous Student Advisor Raymond Sewell MA’14,  all six valedictorians, alumna Sylvia Gawad BSc’14, and the Deans. Over 800 graduates were honoured during the event with Deans congratulating their students while their names scrolled across the screen. The university will mail out parchments and awards and provide an opportunity for grads to attend an in-person convocation in the future when physical distancing restrictions are lifted. Graduates will also be invited to an interactive event in June, which will welcome them to the Alumni Association and provide information on benefits and opportunities. We invite alumni and friends to watch the graduation celebration video at smu.ca/graduation.
